What Accounting System will You Use For Your Home Business?

Accounting is a necessity in any business, large or small. It is simply process of tracking money coming in and out of your business. Of course there is a lot more to it, depending on the type of business you do. I am currently trying to perfect my accounting for my resale business. It is a process, and I have actually taken accounting classes, with more to come soon.

In the past I have always been in some form of business management. Each and every business I worked for had different accounting methods, but it was always for the same result. Where is money coming from, and where is money going to? With all of the research, learning, and tracking that you have already completed for your business, now the IRS needs you to choose an accounting method for reporting your income and expenses.

When filing the taxes for your business there are two basic accounting methods, for any other accounting methods, please read publication 538. I am posting the information available in IRS publication 583. Order your publications at the IRS website. If you ever search for the IRS or any government entity, be sure that it is a .GOV site. There are a lot of sites that look like it is authentic, but are scams.

Exert from Publication 583;

Choosing an Accounting Method:

An accounting method is a set of rules used to determine when and how income and expenses are reported. You choose an accounting method for your business when you file your first income tax return. There are two basic accounting methods.

    1. Cash method: Under the cash method you report income in the tax year you receive it. You usually deduct or capitalize expenses in the tax year you pay them

    2. Accrual Method: Under the accrual method, you generally report income in the tax year you earn it, even though you may receive payment in a later year. You deduct or capitalize expenses in the tax year you incur them, whether or not you pay them that year.

If an inventory is necessary to account for your income, you must generally use an accrual method of accounting for purchases and sales. Inventories include goods held for sale in the normal course of business. They also include raw materials and supplies that will physically become part of merchandise intended for sale.

You must use the same accounting method to figure your taxable income and keep your books. Also, you must use an accounting method that clearly shows your income. In general, any accounting method that consistently uses accounting principles suitable for your trade or business clearly shows your income. An accounting method clearly shows income only if it treats all items of gross income and expense the same from year to year.

More than one business:

When you own more than one business, you can use a different accounting method for each business if the method you use for each clearly shows your income. You must keep a complete separate set of books and records for each business.

Changing your method of accounting:

Once you have set up your accounting method, you must generally get IRS approval before you can change to another method. A change in accounting method not only includes a change in your overall system of accounting, but also a change in the treatment of any material item.

End Exert

Your accounting method is not only important to the IRS, but for your business. Since really starting Weeks Finds, my resale business, I have learned that accounting consists of a lot of different areas. There are purchases from many different places, and costs for almost everything is different even if you buy in bulk. You have to keep track of the cost for each item, set prices for items based on cost, then watch how long an item has been in your possession to see if you need to lower the price. There are also times when I purchase something, then realize it is damaged, I have to account for the loss of that item. I currently have quite a few spread sheets going, but I am trying to get the process streamlined. Once the business gets more profit, I would love to invest in an inventory tracking system or a POS. Something that will allow me to spend more time on the sales end of the business, rather then the accounting end.

This is a topic I will probably be delving into more. I have the publication 538, which is accounting periods, and methods. It has a lot more information on accounting methods available and rules to those methods. It is something I want to learn more about for my home business, and would love to share the knowledge I gain with anyone wanting to learn.

Off Topic, but I want to share!

I try to share what I am doing as far as my online income, but have not shared much about my personal life. I had to share this. I am pregnant with my first child, possibly twins! I am very excited, and very scared. I am single and this is my very first pregnancy. I know everything is going to be OK though. This just gives me even more to push for to earn money online and at my day job. I use this blog to share more of my online income, but I do have a blog where I share a little more of my personal life if anyone is interested. It is A Personal Financial Journey. The blog is about things that I am going through financially, but I also add a little more of me into the blog. You are all welcome!

At Home Income Weekly Update 4/8/2010

Since I am back working a little more, I am beginning to increase my earnings. I did sell a few things on Ebay, and that definitely increased my earnings. I am having a yard sale next week and whatever I do not sell I will be considering putting that on Ebay if it is worth the time.

The writing has not been a big income for me this week, there has been problems on Ehow that are uncontrollable. That problem has decrease my Ehow income by more than $5 for the week. Associated Content has decreased in views, and Bukisa is not a big earner at all. FireHow has been a good site so far. I have had three featured articles on the site so far. The writing earnings could be more, and I am determined to increase the earnings.

I do have a few other at home income opportunities, and they have been doing fairly well. I am learning that all of the small home incomes do make the income increase. I have almost reached payout on Mysurvey, which is $10. I have reached payout on Mypoints, but I will be letting the points add up. I could cash out at $10, but it is a better value to wait for the $25 gift card.

I am half way to payout on Sendearnings and Inboxdollars. Once I reach payout on these two sites I will have $60 to add to my earnings. That is a great amount for reading a couple of emails each day.

My earnings this week were a little more than $135. If I did not have the Ebay items it would be dramatically decreased, so that was great to have.

Goals for next week:

  • Focus on writing sites other than Ehow
  • Begin to make a schedule again
  • Focus on my work, and not everything else in my life
  • Find ways to increase my earnings by even a small amount

Changes In My Home Income

I have not been online much for the last week, but had a big surprise yesterday when I came online. Ehow is making a very big change, and I am not sure how I will deal with it. There are a couple of options; quit writing for Ehow, begin writing for Demand Studios, or write more for other sites.

I think I am going to choose the last on. I found a great site that is very similar to Ehow, but does not have as many problems. The site is Firehow. I have written 46 articles since I began a month ago, 6 of those were in the last couple of days. In this time I have made close to $3. Some may not think that is much, but it shows the potential of the site. If I continue to write on Firehow as I did on Ehow, I will make more money. More money is always good money when you are trying to make an income from home.

With the changes to Ehow I will still receive the income from the site, and then when I add Fire how the earnings will be quite a bit more. I am currently making around $80 a month on Ehow. If I write the same amount of articles on Fire how I can double those earnings. If I promote the articles on both sites, well you see where I am going with that.

I am very upset about the changes to Ehow. I am still undecided about what I am going to do, but I have options. With there being so many great writing sites on the internet I will be able to continue my writing. This is great to know since my writing is the biggest part of my at home income.

The next week will be slow for me. When everything is organized again I will be able to focus on my income more than I ever have before. Thanks to everyone for there support.

Frustrated

I have been trying to make an at home income actively for about six months now. It was not because it was a choice, it was a necessity. I was injured at work and was stuck at home. When my work comp decided not to pay after a month, I was stuck. I was unable to work, but I had to have an income. That is when I began writing online. I am so happy I have found online writing, but I do get frustrated.

My husband works his heart out every day trying to support us. I have been looking for a job, but am unable to travel far because we only have one car. I have applied at all of the businesses within two miles of our apartment, but I am having no luck.

It has bothered me from time to time. It seems to be even more frustrating today, but I cannot pin point exactly why. I want to contribute more to our home. I am used to making a full time income of $25-$30 grand a year, and I am now making a little more than $200 a month. It is a big pay cut, and it can be very frustrating at times.

I have to be positive. We are only a little behind on a few bills, and we are both pretty healthy. Things could be so much worse, and I know it. I pray about it all the time. I do not pray to be rich, but I pray for me to be able to contribute more and we be able to enjoy our lives.

There is a plus side at the moment. I am doing something that I enjoy, and I am doing it from home. It gives us more time to spend with our families, and do other things that we love. I know it will take time to reach my goal home income, and I am working hard to reach that goal.

I know that others that have reached there goal home incomes had to work extremely hard, and be patient. Knowing this I have to do the same. I know it will be 6 months to a year before I truly see an at home income, and I am willing to work on that.

I am sure that everyone that works from home knows exactly what I am talking about. There are points in the process that are just frustrating, and can take a lot out of you. If you are looking for instant gratification the majority of online income sources are not for you. It take time, knowledge, patience, and pure determination to reach your goals.

This post was for me to relieve my mind. I needed to vent to people that understand exactly what I am talking about. It has actually made me feel much better, and I am ready to work. I feel my frustration leaving, and my determination coming back. Thank you for listening.

At Home Income Weekly Update 3/15/2010

My at home income has been pretty good this week. Adsence has began to increase slightly and I have had a small increase on some of my writing sites. I have been unable to publish articles on Ehow the last couple of days, so I have been putting my focus on other writing sites.

I have made payout on Mysurvey, and should receive that this week. That will give me a little increase for next weeks update. I have also made payout on Mypoints, but I am going to let the points build up so I can get a gift card that has more money on it.

My At Home Income Earnings-$26

My Goals For Next Week:

  • Publish more on Ehow if the publishing tool works again.
  • Publish a couple of articles on Associate Content and Bukisa
  • Promote all of my articles on Shetoldme and Xomba
  • Sell a few items on Ebay

2009 Earnings & 2010 Expectations

Happy New Year!

2009 was a pretty good year. I discovered that there is ways to make money online, and I did pretty well since August. I had did a couple of things before August, but that is when I really put a lot into my new found home business.

I made about $600 since August. That is an extra income considering a lot of it was residual. The majority of the earnings was from my writing income on Ehow, Associated Content, and Bukisa. I am involved in a couple of survey sites, but I only make $40 or so a year with them. I stay involved with them because I only spend a minute or so a day earning money with them.

I just recently discovered Google Adsence, and have only made $20 so far. I did not put that in my earning total. I now have three blogs, and put earn from sites like she told me.

2010:

I am planning on making a decent income this year. I am hoping for at least $1000 a month by the end of July, or sooner.

How I plan to reach my goals-

Write more articles on my writing sites
Focus more on SEO when writing
Promote my articles in more ways
Update my blogs regularly, and possibly start a couple of other blogs
Discover more earning opportunities

This is just the beginning of 2010, so I am sure my goals may change during the year. I will share them all with you. I am hoping I can share a true online success story with all of you.

Progress Update

I am currently getting fair earnings from my work. So far this month I have made about $30 from my work. It is showing a lower earning rate than last month, but it is extra income. The Holiday season is here, and a lot of people are doing more than getting on the internet.

I am focusing on my SEO for the writing, broadening my adsence account to other sites. I have also been receiving a lot of surveys about Holiday shopping, and about half of my earnings is from that.

Since it is the Holiday season I will not be able to focus as much as I would like, I will also be on vacation from the 13th to the 20th. I am sure this will also hinder my earnings. I will try to get a lot of work completed before I leave, I want to be happy with my earnings when I return.
